Fotokite | Actively Tethered Drones for Emergency Response

Fotokite | Actively Tethered Drones for Emergency Response

Fotokite is an autonomous tethered UAS designed to provide mission-critical situational awareness for public safety and first responders. As an ETH Zurich spinoff supported by a European Horizon 2020 technology grant, the platform delivers uninterrupted, high-resolution thermal and video telemetry, overcoming the flight-time limits and piloting demands of traditional drones. Its active tether to a vehicle-mounted base station enables fully autonomous, indefinite operation without a dedicated pilot, allowing teams to focus solely on the mission. Engineered for fire and rescue services, Fotokite is authorized by aviation authorities, offering teams a safer, more reliable alternative to free-flying drones. With single-button launch, flight, and landing, it maximizes safety, efficiency, and operational uptime for emergency response teams.

Product Language & CMFG: Led design research to define distinct product language directions and CMFG specifications for Fotokite, Axon, and Pierce, applying this evolved framework across brand books, tradeshow environments, and vehicle livery.

Hardware UX: Developed a novel hardware UX framework to map physical touchpoints and audio-visual indicators across interdependent system components, establishing a clear, adaptable reference for the development team to ensure intuitive device interactions for first responders in high-stress conditions.

ID Geometry & Engineering Support: Partnered with engineering to develop ID concepts for camera and structural component redesigns, optimizing aesthetics and exploring expanded manufacturing methods to support commercial scaling.

Strategic Vision for Investment: Created speculative visualizations for future-product capabilities, illustrating how specialized body-worn sensors and camera payloads could provide real-time thermal data mapping and personnel tracking to attract venture investment.
